Switzerland travel information

It’s easy to get excited about visiting Switzerland when you think about all of the diverse scenery, culture, luxurious shopping, fine food, and pampering that await you – not to mention the invigorating Alpine activities that Switzerland is so famous for.

Everything That You Want In A Vacation Is Here

It doesn't matter what you are looking to do on your vacation, you will find it here in Switzerland. The best of everything is here – including shopping, dining, museums, sightseeing, spas, festivals, nightlife, music, and invigorating outdoor recreation that is convenient to every major city. As well, if you can only visit one country in Europe this year, you will enjoy the influences from surrounding France, Italy, Austria, and Germany in this small, but incredibly charismatic country tucked away in the Alps. Switzerland is also enjoyable to visit year-round, because there are just as many things to do in the winter as there are in the summer, and the southern region of Ticino can experience milder weather during any time of the year.

Getting Around Switzerland

Once you get there, getting around in Switzerland can be half the fun of your vacation. Trains and other means of public transportation go everywhere, and the scenery you experience as you go from major cities to spectacular mountain backdrops is an attraction in and of itself. Trains are efficient and on-time, and there are also scenic railways that offer exclusive day trips into the Swiss Alps if you prefer not to rent a car to sightsee. There are also more unconventional means of transportation like balloon rides through the Alps, the ski lifts and gondolas that run up the mountains, and the steamers that operate on the famous Lake Geneva, Lucerne, Lugano and others. It’s wonderful how generic transportation in Switzerland becomes a great way to sight-see and experience the breathtaking beauty of the lakes and mountains of the country, most of which looks like a picture-perfect postcard.

Shopping In Switzerland

Like everything else in this fascinatingly wide-ranging country, shopping can mean many different things. Of course, while Switzerland is renowned for its watches and other timepieces, you can also buy the finest wines and chocolates, along with many other Alpine Culture goodies that you simply can’t get anywhere else. And while you may be only able to window-shop for Rolexes and Cartier watches in Geneva and Zurich, you will certainly be able to splurge on the specialties and exquisitely handcrafted keepsakes at the charming local shops and markets that are everywhere. There are also many boutiques that carry luxury and fashionable accessories that are unique to Switzerland.

Recreation Like Nowhere Else in Europe

When you think of recreation in Switzerland, the first thing that comes to mind is the world-class skiing, which starts in December and runs through sometime in April, depending on the weather. (Although at the resort destination of Zermatt, there is skiing throughout the summer on the Matterhorn.) However, Switzerland is not only a country of pistes, it is also a land of hiking trails, mountain climbing and spelunking. There is not an outdoor activity that you can think of that isn't better when it is enjoyed amidst the splendor of the Swiss Alps. Mountain biking, swimming or boating in Switzerland’s famous lakes, or parasailing high above the plains are only some of the other activities you can enjoy during the warmer months of the year.

Wellness Spas

After your daily activities are over, Switzerland is also known for its wellness spas and the healing properties of it naturally occurring thermal springs. Just North of Zurich, in the municipality of Baden, 18 sulfurous springs bubble up 1 million liters a day of 47 degree Celsius water with the highest mineral concentration in Switzerland. This is enjoyable enough, but there are many wellness spas and hotels that surround these springs, as well as throughout Switzerland, where many people go for luxury spa services and wellness treatments of all kinds.

Fine Dining

Eating is another pastime to pursue while you are in Switzerland, and besides the wine, chocolate and cheese fondues, there is so much more to the cuisine of Switzerland. This goes back to the German, Italian, French, Austrian, and Romansh influences that come from the neighboring countries of Switzerland. This influence makes the cuisine of Switzerland too multi-faceted to classify, but suffice it to say, if you are not dining in a five-star restaurant – then you will be at one of the most eclectic, individual local hangouts you have ever been to – dining on food that is much too tasty to describe with mere words.

Nightlife, Museums, Culture, Architecture and More Abound in Switzerland’s Major Cities

Most cities have well-preserved and extremely ancient historical districts that will take at least a day to get through, and the museums will be world-class. Nightlife is as widespread and rambunctious as you like it, and like the rest of Switzerland, there is something for every taste. As well, most cities lend themselves to weekend city breaks, where you can completely immerse yourself in a region of Switzerland for the perfect two-day retreat.
